Amphetamines are prescribed for conditions like ADHD and Narcolepsy. The primary medical use of amphetamines are to promote wakefulness. This property also makes amphetamines a very popular street drug. The user can stay awake longer, concentrate harder, and the amphetamines can even increase physical stamina. Amphetamines have been used during war time to keep soldiers fighting longer, during college finals so the students can study harder, and in sports so the athletes can compete at a higher level. Users report feelings of euphoria and well being. This can often be followed by feelings of extreme anxiety and irritation.

There are no FDA approved drug treatments designed specifically to treat amphetamine abuse. However, bupropion, sold under the name Wellbutrin, has been shown to reduce the high and cravings associated with amphetamine abuse. The best treatment currently available for amphetamine abuse is a multi-pronged approach which includes, family education, group therapy, behavioral therapy, 12 step support, and drug testing.
